ARTEMISIA ANNUA (SWEET WORMWOOD)

Common names:

Artemisia, Sweet wormwood, Sweet annua, Artemisia annua.

 

Traditional uses of Artemisia annua:

Artemisia annua has the following properties:

  • mainly, treatment of Babesia co-infection,
  • reduction of the effects of endotoxin to some extent, which may be useful in relieving Herxheimer reactions,
  • some clinical observations show that the herb probably can also be effective in fighting Lyme disease spirochetes.

Side effects:

In high doses, it may cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as loss of appetite, nausea, painful spasms, diarrhea and vomiting. Very high doses (5000 mg daily for three days) caused hepatitis. It disappears after dechallenge.

Contraindications:

It should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.
